Happy National Dairy Month!  Celebrate the last few days of June with delicious and nutrient-packed dairy foods.  Here are some tasty ideas to get started.

Breakfast

Skip the syrup and serve pancakes with low-fat yogurt and sliced fruit.

Make a smoothie with low-fat chocolate milk or yogurt and frozen berries and bananas.

Think savory, and serve low-fat grilled cheese on a whole grain English muffin.

Use low-fat milk rather than water to make oatmeal.

Lunch

Say “no” to soda, and have low-fat milk instead.

Sprinkle 1/4 cup reduced-fat cheese onto a salad, soup or sandwich.

Hold the mayo, and enjoy a healthy dressing:

Try 1/4 cup shredded reduced fat Colby Jack cheese  and 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt mixed with salsa on a grilled chicken sandwich.

Combine 1 cup of plain low-fat yogurt with cilantro or 1/4 cup of shredded low-fat cheddar cheese and taco seasoning to add zest to a burger.

Swap tartar sauce for low-fat yogurt mixed with relish and ground black pepper.

Snack

Enjoy string cheese made with skim milk.

Make a parfait with low-fat vanilla yogurt, fruit and granola.

Dinner

For a creamy side, make risotto or a favorite soup with reduced-fat milk instead of water or broth.

Try homemade pizza on a whole grain crust with fresh veggies and reduced-fat cheese.

Sprinkle a small amount of reduced-fat, sharp cheese onto a baked potato or casserole.  Remember, the more flavor the topping provides, the less is needed, so using a flavorful cheese on top of a dish is a great way to keep calories in check while still adding great flavor.
