Get Your Plate Into Shape

“Choose water instead of sugary drinks.”  “Look out for sodium in foods.”  These are just some of the tips the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association)  suggests to help everyone be more mindful of food and physical activity choices during the month of March, which is National Nutrition Month.

To help you celebrate, The Fit Fridge will feature resources that you can use in your kitchen, classroom or community to create more healthy plates all month long.  Our first tool to share is a great set of handouts with ideas for smart snacking.  A recent report in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that, among adults participating in the National Healthy and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1994-2004), snacking was associated with improved dietary quality and increased intakes of fruit, whole grains and milk.  In fact, when planned properly, snacks can help maintain satiety, provide needed nutrients and prevent overeating later in the day.  Click the link above to download the handouts, and check The Fit Fridge blog often throughout March for more great ideas!
